A Reflection on YMM's Summer Camps

The Goodness of God!

September, 2023

As our mentees head back out to school, we take a moment to look back and reflect on our summer day and residential camps.

We were once again amazed to see God’s faithfulness in this season. We approached our camps this year with many challenges, but in steadfast faith; we committed our plans to the Lord, and as He always does, He carried us through in ways exceedingly, abundantly above all we could ever have asked or imagined possible.

Our Day Camp ran from July 24 through 27 at the Bus Stop Mission in Salem; the support of the Mission’s staff was again invaluable this year, as they capably assisted with administrative tasks and helped us to keep the mentees organized and orderly. The event was well attended, and we welcomed several new participants from both the Salem and Priory areas. This year’s theme was “Talk it Out, Not Fight it Out”, and each day’s activities involved sessions with community leaders including representatives from the Jamaica Constabulary Force. The children also participated daily in praise and worship, arts and crafts, and  games. The event culminated with an entertaining talent show which was thoroughly enjoyed by participants and observers alike.

This highly anticipated event began with a vibrant worship service on Sunday, July 30. This year’s theme was “Influencer, Follower or Fan?” During the activity filled week, campers were led through a structured routine that emphasised discipline, responsibility, service, respect, teamwork and leadership. Delicious meals were served daily thanks to the generous donations received from our sponsors in combination with the creative culinary skills of a member of the Bus Stop Mission’s team.  In addition to enjoying several fun-filled days intertwined with a variety of learning opportunities, the children were also privileged to experience an adventurous outing courtesy of the generosity of Chukka Adventures. The traditional banquet, held on the last night, was also a treat as the campers donned their elegant outfits for an evening of fellowship and great food, generously sponsored by local eatery Plantation Smokehouse. Camp came to an end on Sunday, August 6, with a reflective worship service and our hearts filled with gratitude and thanksgiving to God for His unfailing goodness and for presiding over the week’s events. The service was followed by a camping awards ceremony, in which individual campers and the most outstanding camper team were recognized and rewarded.

Our deepest appreciation goes out to all the private and corporate sponsors, volunteers, and presenters who freely gave of their time and resources and contributed to making this year’s camp a resounding success!

Thank you also to the parents and guardians of our campers for placing their trust in us, and for giving us the opportunity to minister to, fellowship with, and care for their children.
